# Mission Control

> Mission Control measures your progress toward a goal, such as 500 sign-ups per month.

Mission Control shows how close you are to a business goal: a number of sign-ups, purchases, or
another event, in a period. It lives in the dashboard under **Mission Control**. A goal reads
your existing events, so you do not need to change your site.

## Create a goal

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Mission Control">
    In the dashboard sidebar, click **Mission Control**. Then click **Create Goal**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the goal">
    Enter a name, for example "Monthly Signups".
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the target event">
    Choose the event that counts as one completion, for example `signup_completed`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the target value and the period">
    Enter the number that you aim for, for example 500. Choose daily, weekly, or monthly. Then
    save. Mission Control starts to count at once.
  </Step>
</Steps>

A goal reads the events that Grain already holds. If your site has sent the target event
before, the goal shows the past progress at once.

## What a goal shows

| Item | Shows |
| - | - |
| Progress bar | How close the count is to the target |
| Current count and target | The two numbers |
| Trend line | The count over time, next to earlier periods |
| Pace indicator | Whether the count is ahead of or behind the elapsed part of the period |
| Attribution breakdown | The traffic sources, pages, and campaigns that produce the completions |

## Attribution

Mission Control connects each completion to its source:

| Dimension | Values |
| - | - |
| Traffic source | Organic search, paid ads, social media, direct, referral |
| Landing page | The page that the visitor saw first before the completion |
| Campaign | The UTM parameters of the visit |
| Device | Desktop and mobile, with the conversion rate of each |

The breakdown tells you which source produces the completions, not only how many completions
you have.

## The Studio intelligence pane

Studio is the Grain browser extension. When you open Studio on a page of your site, the
intelligence pane shows the Mission Control data of that page:

* The progress of each goal on the current page.
* The trackers and events on the page that contribute to a goal.
* Suggestions for the page, based on its current performance.

## What Mission Control does not do

* A goal does not create events. The target event must exist. Read
  [Track an event](/core/event-tracking).
* A goal does not count clicks on one element. For that, create a tracker. Read
  [Trackers](/features/trackers).
* A goal does not show the path to the completion. For that, create a track. Read
  [Tracks](/features/tracks).
